Eat, Play, Love

This was Emma's idea!

So busy this past week, what a whirlwind it has been! We got together with friends nearly every day since Wednesday.
We had three mother/child pairs over on Wednesday (one was a mother-child-child  actually!) for play inside then in the yard with the pool to cool off. We're really taking advantage of the hot summer weather that has snuck up on us as the season is nearing its end. This little pool which we found for free has been used nearly every day by Emma, and her friends when they are over.
Thursday was Emma's 2 year Pediatrician visit, which was very difficult for Emma. We have a kind and gentle pediatrician but Emma still has anxiety, likely anticipating the shot at the end of the visit. We are told it is not uncommon for children to have doctor anxiety at two years and the third year should be better. I'm glad we won't have to have another well visit until next year! After the appointment we did go to our new favorite ice cream shop, the blue pig which is just around the corner from her Drs office. This place is a gem. They use local dairy and pick and prepare all their ingredients and have a huge variety of flavors that changes daily. On this day Emma got Pig M&M icecream, and a scoop of peanut butter chocolate swirl for mama. So tasty!
Friday was a wonderful play at our friends Tricia's with her daughter Shea and a few other girls. At one point Emma declared she is helping Millie, then the two girls pushed a doll stroller together. When Emma stopped this game she said "Millie's turn!" And released the stroller to her. She has really been practicing sharing lately. Later in the yard Emma took it upon herself to bring the girls cups of water that were placed on a table. She makes my heart melt every time she says "He go!" (Here you go!) She also collected tennis balls and piled them in front of the family's dog Rio and would move the pile two balls at a time when Rio moved to a new place in the yard. My little caregiver!
After play we were invited to go for MORE ice cream and is saying no to icecream something people do? We cannot, not if it's at the Blue Pig(which it was!) on a hot summer day(which it was!)!(!!) So Emma and Millie got to enjoy their treat and play while the moms chatted. I brought home a pint to have around for Daddyman who has been unable to join us on our ice cream excursions.
Saturday we had grown-up friends over, a couple from Brooklyn. It was a nice get together, they got to see our new home and how much Emma has grown. It had been a long time since we saw these friends so Emma's has changed quite a bit but she is as sweet and patient as she has always been. This is confirmed to me when they complimented her well behavior, her independence and merry manner. It goes without saying I'm Emma's #1 fan and I see all these wonderful things about her every day but when another person observes her and vocalizes to me what they see... Well I appreciate it very much!
Sunday was an easy morning at home starting with our tradition of homemade pancakes --and home made syrup to compliment them. Emma's Pop Pop (Patrick's dad) taps maple trees and boils down the sap himself. This is a time consuming process and a good amount of work from start to finish so we're thankful to have a little bit of the fruit of Pop Pops labor! So sweet and lovely, pancakes are not the same without real maple syrup. Later Sunday we went to a friends whose little girl is a year and a half. Emma and Orla played so well together, jumping and rolling on beds, sharing snacks, hugging and making each other laugh. Everyone enjoyed themselves!
We were pretty worn out by Monday morning but being Labor Day we had plans to go to a BBQ in the afternoon. It was a restful day up until then. This BBQ had a couple familiar toddlers for Emma to play with, and some new little boys as well. We hardly ever see boys! Emma concluded our visit there by getting a dance party going in the kitchen. These girls have moves! Emma and Esme exuberantly stoping their feet and jumping around was so entertaining to the audience they had attracted. It was a perfect ending.
Phew. So now it's Tuesday and I'm catching my breath as Emma naps. She has been skipping them a lot lately and this mama needed a break. Though we have no social plans today we did start the day with running around the dog park, groceries (at an unfamiliar store, that always makes it tricky!) and a pop in to the book store to return a book. We saw heavy equipment working in the parking lot on the way out and it was as good as icecream for Emma! She was so interested in this "tractor" scooping and leveling, and the sound of continuous tread on the pavement as the machine seemed to be heading toward us sent Emma running behind me. A thrilling experience! We worked up our appetites so back home I made seared tuna steaks for lunch which were incredibly tasty and quick to prepare and Emma cleared her plate so I'll be making it again in the future.
Okay. No more typing, I will pluck away with my thumb and post the past weeks pictures as I enjoy my ice coffee, before returning to my domestic duties. Thanks for reading, all!
With love.

All Tall!

Lunch before icecream :-)

Oh gosh the best banana bread is any banana bread stil warm

Emma leading the way to the dog park this morning.

Seared Tuna steaks
Rubbed with lemon and cooked on a preheated pan over med/high heat for 1-2 minutes each side, then covered with a sauce of soy sauce and grated ginger. Scrumptious!

Whisking away

I really should have gotten pictures of the top of her play stove and the step stool and her clothes after this loaf of bread, all covered in dough.

Bread is in the oven, gonna watch it rise!

Pictured here is a very happy girl. She isn't feeling very well (see those nose drippings?) and is very messy. She is very, very much loved.
Hairstyle brought to you by vegetable soup.

What is she doing up on that stool? Will she work up there? Will she play up there? What is up there on top of that counter?

DOUGH. But is started with a tbsp active dry yeast mixed into 3/4c room temperature almond milk. Then a tbsp of melted butter, a tbsp of sugar, 1/2tsp of salt and then about 1 1/2c bread flour.. And you've got a dough that needs some kneading. Emma's little hands were better for pinching the dough and squishing it between her fingers. I kneaded the main ball until it was ready to set in a bowl, be blown a kiss (it was going to sleep, after all) and rise.

After an hour, our dough doubled in size. I offered it to Emma knowing she'd be happy to punch it down(above picture) then I kneaded it again. Emma took pinches of flour and sprinkled it on the kneading surface as she saw me do. Precise and perfect. After a few minutes we set it on the pan to rise for 45 minutes with the oven preheating..

Bread is in the oven, gonna watch it rise,
Right before my very eyes

35 minutes in the oven and here is the final result. Plus a home smelling like fresh bread.

I can't wait to eat a slice with some butter and a bowl of soup for today's lunch. Yummy!
-----------

We will definitely be making bread on a weekly basis after this. It was such a special and rewarding thing to share with Emma. You can't beat fresh bread, still hot out of the oven and steaming. Best of all, this is bread we made together.

P is for Persimmon

We always get out our Eating the Alphabet book to match a new fruit or vegetable with the illustration by Lois Ehlert. Emma pointed to the picture of the persimmon when I opened to the P page... Hmm, lucky guess? Or astute pupil! Emma then got her toy knife and tried to cut it.

(I ended up cutting it with my real knife but you were right on target, Emma!)
We have never had persimmon before. It looks a bit like a tomato.. Before taking a bite Emma held a piece to her nose and smelled it.

The sample..

A trip to Fishkill Farms or Father's Day 16x9s or a compilation of unflattering photos of Emma

Sunday was a happy Father's Day with a trip to Fishkill Farms to mark the occasion. Berry picking, cherry picking, music blaring, hens were staring, hat had fallen, good times calling. You get all that?

The fields had seen a lot of rain and they put a one pint per family limit on the berry picking to ensure there was enough to go around. This was fine for us because as we discovered: we are berry picky. Emma is not picky and ate a few berries that didn't make the basket. She also ate the leaves if we didn't retrieve the stem from her in time. She loves strawberries!

Patrick stood in a line of Dads waiting to get his free scoop of icecream. Being a dad has perks!

Emma made funny faces for her first taste of icecream. I thought she'd love it but she seemed to think it was just o-k, and a little strange. That's alright Emma, you were only allowed a taste anyway!

Lets hear it for dads!

(Emma, in the style of Emma, fell asleep on the drive home and continued to nap in bed after we arrived.)

Temp Tee, Temp Tee!

My name is Emma and I picked out my own dress today!

I've recently set up my closet so that Emma's clothes are hanging on a low bar. She gets a kick out of pushing the hangers back and forth and looking at the different clothes she has hanging up. This morning her attention went right to this striped purple dress, so with my help she got the hanger off the bar and with her help I got her dressed. We make a good team.
It's a rainy day. It rained all morning but that never stops us from going out. I wear Emma and keep us dry under a big green umbrella.

We stopped at the library to return some books and Emma had a little free roaming time to explore, look at books on the shelves, and point at everything she sees. A couple days ago she would point and hum at everything, point "Mm?" point "Mm?" And all today she points and says, "Bah?" On hikes she gets both pointers going over both of my shoulders, one after another, "Mm? Mm? Mm??" Trees, rocks, streams, bringing everything to my attention. She cracks me up!

We got a few errands done while we were out and made it home for lunch. Emma had something new today: whipped cream cheese in a pita with shredded cucumber. She was crazy about cream cheese (that's my girl!) and enjoyed holding slices of the sandwich herself to bite off. I actually tried giving her a bite of my portion of the sandwich which resulted in her grabbing on to it with her hand and tearing away a hunk. She wasn't looking to share this new, delicious food, but she did eat it very carefully with her hands.

What's for breakfast?

Goo morning! You know, every great day starts with a great breakfast. What's on Emma's plate this morning? A tasty omelette stuffed with red pepper, spinach, mushrooms, and topped with white cheddar cheese. She's also got some steamed carrots and toast, and of course she eats all of everything I give her.. What a little moose!

After breakfast we wash up, dress, and begin today's adventures. Here we go!
